Living Conditions in Mali, Africa

Djeneba lives in Mali, Africa. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa and has a population of 19.1 million people. The country is located in sub-Saharan West Africa. Mali is a landlocked country. That means it is surrounded by other countries and has no direct access to the ocean.

Mali’s economy is primarily based on agriculture. People spend most of their days working in fields to provide for their families. And though these families work hard they earn very little money and most of the country lives in poverty. Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. According to the Legatum Prosperity Index, it ranks 148th out of 167, and over the last 10 years has been slipping down the index. One out of three kids are forced to start working under the age of 14 to help support their families. Mali continues to have problems with political instability and healthcare that prevent them from moving forward as a country.

Our hope in sponsoring Djeneba is to give her the opportunities that many of her peers lack: access to education. Education has been shown to empower children and their families.
